Trip Overview

The experience of a lifetime for the true animal lover and conservation enthusiast, this exceptional safari offers the unique opportunity for hands-on interaction with rhinos as part of a ground-breaking conservation project designed to counter the increasing threat of poaching. Find yourself face-to-face with these massive, endangered animals as they are prepared for translocation to a safer, more protected environment.
A rhino is killed every seven hours in South Africa and more of these magnificent animals are lost to poachers every year than they are born. Through the Rhinos Without Borders initiative, &Beyond, in conjunction with Great Plains Conservation and various government ministries, has committed to moving up to 100 rhinos (both black and white) from existing high density populations in South Africa, and releasing them into the wild in various parts of Botswana, a country with traditionally low rhino densities and more stringent anti-poaching measures.
We are offering you the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be actively involved in conserving the rhino for future generations by taking part in the capture of the first ten rhinos to be moved to their new homes. Meet and interact with the expert conservation teams involved, witness the rhino being darted and take part in the debriefing and lessons learned from this crucial conservation initiative.

Rhinos Without Borders

Increasing at an alarming rate, poaching is now at an all-time high in Africa. Fuelled by rising demand, the illegal trade in ivory and rhino horn has seen the number of elephant and rhino poached throughout Africa rise significantly in recent years. This ominous trend can only be reversed if governments, conservation-minded companies and concerned citizens unite and take immediate action, standing shoulder-to-shoulder. Translocation is the main reason we still have rhino today. By splitting up populations and relocating them to suitable habitats, we provide additional security to these animals and spread them out over a larger area.

Itinerary

  1. On arrival at OR Tambo International Airport, you will board a direct flight to a safari lodge in South Africa. Please note that the exact dates and location of the rhino translocation is being kept confidential for security reasons and in order to avoid exposing the rhino to any threats during this delicate operation. Details will be disclosed after making contact with us. Your first afternoon at this elegant safari lodge will be used to settle in to your luxury air conditioned suite, where you will spend the next three nights. You will also explore your surroundings on a shared game drive. Please note that there will be no more than six guests per vehicle, each accompanied by a ranger who is thoroughly versed in rhino conservation.

This evening, you will gather in the boma before dinner to meet the expert conservation teams that will be carrying out the rhino capture, as well as the key stakeholders of the various travel companies that are running the initiative. A formal presentation will provide a full overview of the Rhinos Without Borders project and its achievements to date. Dinner will be enlivened by conversation with the conservation professionals and will be followed by a briefing on what to expect during the capture operation the following day.
  2. Today you will enjoy a steaming cup of morning tea or coffee and breakfast before being driven to the rendezvous point. On arrival, you will be given a full safety briefing before the capture operation begins. Refreshments will be provided during the morning and you will enjoy brunch back at the lodge or al fresco in the heart of the bush.

In the afternoon you will once more set off, hoping to dart and capture more rhino before it becomes too dark to operate safely. Returning to the lodge, you will be joined by the entire capture team for cocktails. The wildlife veterinarians and other conservation officials will go through the day’s events, answering any questions you may have.

Please note that any operation involving wild animals needs to retain a fair level of flexibility and, therefore, this program may vary depending on any unforeseen situations encountered during the operation.
  3. Today will be a similar itinerary to Day 2 provided the conditions for capture are suitable.

  4. Wake up early and enjoy a hot beverage before setting off to witness the darting of another rhino or to enjoy an early morning game drive. You will return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out and catching your return flight to Johannesburg.
