Chasing Churchill in Egypt with Celia Sandys
10 Day Cairo and Nile River Program
Presented in Cooperation with the Churchill Centre
Hosted by Author, Biographer and Granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill, Celia Sandys
In July 1898, Churchill, thirsty for battle, joined the 21st Lancers in Cairo and sailed up the Nile stopping at Luxor and Aswan en route for Khartoum and the last great cavalry charge of the British army at the Battle of Omdurman.
In 1907, as Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, he again visited Cairo and Aswan. In 1921, before yet another visit to Egypt, he wrote to his wife, “I hope to paint a few pictures in the intervals between settling my business. Naturally, I am taking all the right colours for the yellow desert, purple rocks and crimson desert. Clementine, I shall enjoy showing you around some of the places I know so well.”
On this visit, he cemented his friendship with Lawrence of Arabia both politically and socially, culminating in a camel race from the Pyramids to the centre of Cairo.
During WW2 he visited Egypt to spend time with the troops in the desert and for high level meetings with, among others, Generals Alexander and Montgomery, President Roosevelt and Chiang Kai-shek. He stayed at
both the British Embassy and the Mena House Hotel.
Celia Sandys, presenter of the three-part PBS series Chasing Churchill and author of the book on which is based, accompanied her grandfather, Winston Churchill, on his travels in his later years.
Join Celia Sandys as she retraces his footsteps in Egypt with Churchill expert Allen Packwood, Keeper of the Archives at Churchill College, Cambridge.

Old Cataract Hotel
The Old Cataract Hotel is perched atop a granite hill at the Nile river's edge in Aswan, Egypt, and takes its name from the rivers First Cataract (rapids) at the traditional northern border of Nubia.. It was Thomas Cook, the grand tour manager of Egypt who had the hotel constructed, mostly for the tourists that his company was escorting down the Nile at the end of the 19th century. Unlike many historical hotels in Egypt, it was never a royal palace or lodge. It has always been a grand hotel.
