Trip Overview

Be prepared for a thrilling and deeply moving wilderness experience.

Your 6 days in Rwanda will take you through the hustle and bustle of one of the busiest cities on the continent and into the PNV, a national park accessed only by pre-arranged permit. Stay at the Kigali Serena, typically reserved for government and celebrity visitors in the city before making your way to a luxury Eco-Lodge in the Virunga Mountains which has been described to have "the best view in Africa".

Stay next to parks and come up close to the gorillas.  There are only around 700 mountain gorillas still living in the forests today and seven gorilla families are habituated in this region.Track these majestic primates in the Virunga Conservation Area of Rwanda – this is the mountainous area where Dian Fossey worked and is buried, and where "Gorillas In The Mist" was filmed.

Permits to enter the parks are issued sparingly, but are pre-booked and included in your experience – in addition to a complimentary massage to relax your hiking legs.

Points of Interest

Kigali

Kigali

The capital of Rwanda as well as the economic, cultural and transportation hub of the nation. Most travelers visiting Rwanda will pass through the densely populated capital at least once during their stay.

Before (or after) heading to Parc National des Volcans, be sure to visit the Genocide Memorial and a local craft market.

PNV

Parc National des Volcans

Home of the endangered Mountain Gorillas, PNV is an impressive volcanic mountain range in the heart of the Virungas. The lush forested slopes create an idyllic setting for tracking these majestic creatures.

Should time permit, addtional activities such as a visit to Diane Fossey's grave or tracking the Golden Monkeys are also possible.

Traveler Reviews

Itinerary

  1. Upon arrival into Kigali (KGL) Airport you will be met by an AuthentEscapes representative holding a sign with your name on it for private road transfer to the Kigali Serena Hotel where you will overnight on a bed and breakfast basis in a Studio Suite.

  2. This morning after checkout you will receive a full briefing on your upcoming gorilla tracking experience. After some brief city touring with a visit to a local craft market and  the genocide memorial, depart for Parc National des Volcans.

The journey north goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga Volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. You will arrive at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge late in the afternoon and will spend the next 3 nights here on a fully inclusive basis.

  3. After a quick breakfast you will make your way to Parc National des Volcans for an introduction to the gorilla family you will track today.

Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. If you are lucky you can get to the gorillas, spend an hour with them and be back at the lodge before lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy.

  4. Today you will go gorilla tracking again in Parc National des Volcans. Should time permit you will have the option to visit Dian Fossey’s Grave, Track the Golden Monkeys, climb a Volcano, hike to the Waterfalls, walk to the local village, watch an Intore Dancers presentation, visit local community projects or a local school.

  5. Checkout at leisure for road transfer back to Kigali and overnight at the Serena. Upon arrival you may choose to have the duration of the day at leisure or participate in additional city touring to any sites you may have missed at the beginning of your trip.

  6. Checkout of the Kigali Serena for private road transfer to Kigali (KGL) Airport in coordination with your outbound international flight.

Accommodations

Kigali Serena

Ideally located on one of Kigali's most charming boulevards, the five-star Kigali Serena Hotel is built around a polished granite atrium, which showcases the very best of Rwandese cultural art.

Relaxed yet elegant, the hotel centres on the Executive Lounge and Bar, which opens onto a wide sundeck overlooking the newly refurbished swimming pool. Also overlooking the pool, the popular Milima Restaurant offers a wide range of all-day buffet choices, while the relaxed Sokoni Café offers inside and outside poolside seating.

The capital's natural business hub, the hotel also boasts its own extensive conference centre, 500-seater auditorium and lavish ballroom.

Volcanoes Virunga Lodge

The magnificent Virunga Lodge is set on a stunning hilltop in a spectacular location with a panoramic view of the Virunga volcanoes and shimmering lakes Ruhondo and Bulera.

The lodge has been described as having “the best view in the world” and as “one of the finest lodges in Africa”. The lodge’s eight bandas offer elegance and great comfort, with their ‘organic, bush-chic’ design reflecting the local building style. Luxurious, en-suite bathrooms, with full facilities including low-flush toilets and running solar hot water, allow you to enjoy all the comforts of home, while still being sensitive to the environment. Each banda has its own terrace with spectacular views of the volcanoes or lakes.

Aside from gorilla tracking, guests can climb a volcano, track the golden monkey, visit Dian Fossey's grave or go for gentle strolls around the picturesque villages near the lakes. The property is located within a three hour drive from Kigali or a long day drive from Kampala.
