Be prepared for a thrilling and deeply moving wilderness experience.
Your 6 days in Rwanda will take you through the hustle and bustle of one of the busiest cities on the continent and into the PNV, a national park accessed only by pre-arranged permit. Stay at the Kigali Serena, typically reserved for government and celebrity visitors in the city before making your way to a luxury Eco-Lodge in the Virunga Mountains which has been described to have "the best view in Africa".
Stay next to parks and come up close to the gorillas. There are only around 700 mountain gorillas still living in the forests today and seven gorilla families are habituated in this region.Track these majestic primates in the Virunga Conservation Area of Rwanda – this is the mountainous area where Dian Fossey worked and is buried, and where "Gorillas In The Mist" was filmed.
Permits to enter the parks are issued sparingly, but are pre-booked and included in your experience – in addition to a complimentary massage to relax your hiking legs.
Upon arrival into Kigali (KGL) Airport you will be met by an AuthentEscapes representative holding a sign with your name on it for private road transfer to the Kigali Serena Hotel where you will overnight on a bed and breakfast basis in a Studio Suite.
This morning after checkout you will receive a full briefing on your upcoming gorilla tracking experience. After some brief city touring with a visit to a local craft market and the genocide memorial, depart for Parc National des Volcans.
The journey north goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga Volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. You will arrive at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge late in the afternoon and will spend the next 3 nights here on a fully inclusive basis.
After a quick breakfast you will make your way to Parc National des Volcans for an introduction to the gorilla family you will track today.
Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience. If you are lucky you can get to the gorillas, spend an hour with them and be back at the lodge before lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy.
Today you will go gorilla tracking again in Parc National des Volcans. Should time permit you will have the option to visit Dian Fossey’s Grave, Track the Golden Monkeys, climb a Volcano, hike to the Waterfalls, walk to the local village, watch an Intore Dancers presentation, visit local community projects or a local school.
